PTSA NewsWe need to keep the heat on the Governor and the Legislature!
Summer is a time to relax with your families. Summer, however, requires our vigilance as it is also a critical time for the more than 9 million children of California.

The Legislature and Governor have yet to reach agreement on the 2010/2011 state budget that was due on June 30. With the state facing a $19 billion deficit, education and other critical children's programs are in jeopardy. Join us in speaking out loudly and clearly for all the children of California.

We are asking you to do two things:
1. Send postcards. Wherever you are this summer, whether at home, on vacation, or on "staycation", send postcards to the Governor, your assemblymember and your state senator.
The Governor's mailing address is: Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, State Capitol Building, Sacramento, CA, 95814.

To find the mailing addresses of your legislators in Sacramento, click here. Be sure to include the Capitol room number in the address.
Be sure to include your name and address on the bottom of the postcard.
Please feel free to create your own message, but here are some ideas to help you get started.

The Governor's budget continues to propose even more cuts to education, children's programs and critical social services that are intolerable and unconscionable. Your first responsibility is to meet the fundamental needs of all of our children, including a quality education.

Any responsible approach to solving the current fiscal crisis requires a balanced approach, including additional revenues. These proposed brutal cuts jeopardize the future of our children and the future of our state. Please make sure that the final budget invests in California's more than 9 million children.

The future prosperity of our state requires a well-educated workforce able to compete in the global economy. Brutal cuts to our schools and critical services to children jeopardize California's future. Please stand up for children and do what's right for them NOW...they are our tomorrow.

2. Visit your assemblymember and/or state senator while they are home in their district offices. The members have been sent to their home districts while final budget negotiations are going on. This is an ideal time to gather up your fellow PTA members and/or your children and go on a visit to your representatives. Let them know that you want them to vote for a budget that provides additional revenues to fund education and children's services.

Call the district office to make an appointment.
Print out and review the talking points. Give a copy to your representatives.
Background

It's essential to understand that the state budget process is far from over. Budget negotiations are ongoing. The Senate and Assembly budget committees have reportedly come together on a budget proposal. We have not yet seen the details, but note that the Speaker of the Assembly and Senate Pro Tem claim that their proposal protects education funding and holds to the commitment to repay schools the money they are owed. This proposal also rejects the Governor's proposal to eliminate CalWORKs and make devastating cuts to childcare programs, and other critical children's services including healthcare, mental health programs and more. These programs are protected through the generation of additional revenues.

We will continue to keep you updated as the negotiations continue. Meanwhile, PTA members must remain strong in keeping the heat on and raising our voices on behalf of California's more than 9 million children. Now is the time for action. Ensure that the people that represent you in Sacramento understand that you support additional revenues to solve the budget crisis and to protect funding for education and children's services.
